Sheltered FAQs
When considering moving into sheltered accommodation, there are a number of questions people often ask. We have outlined the most common queries we receive below. Can I redecorate?
Yes.
Can I have a pet?
Firstly, prior permission should be obtained in writing. Secondly, if it’s agreed by AHL the pet should not cause a nuisance to neighbours or AHL.
Can I have a washing machine?
Yes. If you live at one of our sheltered schemes however there is a separate laundry room available that you can use if it is more convenient.
What does the Service charge cover?
The Service Charge covers the actual costs which is measured yearly that provides security systems, external grounds maintenance, heating, lighting, water of all communal areas, laundry, refuse, lift maintenance, window cleaning, communal cleaning, caretaking services and builders insurance.
Will I have a garden?
If you are offered a bungalow you will be responsible for your own garden. If you are rehoused at a sheltered scheme the gardens are communal and will be maintained by AHL.
Can I have friends / family to stay on holiday?
Yes providing they adhere to your tenancy conditions. We also have guestrooms available at all schemes at a cost of £10.00 per night.
Can I change my locks?
Yes providing the cylinder is still on the master key system in case of emergencies.
Do I need to have a telephone installed?
Yes as this is linked up to the digital emergency call equipment which is monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Is the call equipment managed all the time?
Yes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a response time of 1 minute.
Can I install a satellite dish?
If you live at a bungalow, yes you can - however you need to advise AHL and ensure the dish is a standard size and not encroaching on other peoples property.
If you live at a scheme, unfortunately we do not have planning permission for dishes to be erected. However each scheme has a digital aerial allowing tenants to obtain a digital box to receive other channels.
Can I change my bath to a shower unit?
Yes providing written consent from AHL has been received.
If after moving in I decide the property is not for me when could I transfer?
The policy states that this can occur one year from signing your tenancy agreement.
Can I bring my own furniture?
Yes this will be required, as all flats are completely unfurnished.
Do I need a TV licence?
Yes, however this is at a reduced rate if you live at a sheltered scheme.
